Third District Historical Data

Employment, Unemployment, and Housing

Excel files of available employment and housing data are listed below by states and metro areas (metropolitan statistical areas and divisions) and include data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Department of Labor (DOL), and the Census Bureau. As of March 2025, the metro areas listed below reflect new delineations as was determined by the Office of Management and Budget in 2023. Read a brief summary of the geography changes in the three-state region.

We gather payroll employment data (BLS), household employment data (BLS), and unemployment insurance claims data (DOL) for the U.S., Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. All data are seasonally adjusted: The BLS seasonally adjusts all employment data for the U.S. and the three states, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia seasonally adjusts the unemployment insurance claims data.

In addition, payroll and household employment data for the metro areas in the three-state region are available on this website. Total nonfarm payroll employment series for metro areas are seasonally adjusted by the BLS. All sector employment series for all metro areas are seasonally adjusted by the Philadelphia Fed. Household employment data for all metro areas are seasonally adjusted by the BLS. Please note: On March 17, 2025, the BLS announced that it would not be updating seasonally adjusted data for metro areas and divisions for at least its January, February, or March 2025 data releases. As a result, the files for metro areas and divisions below do not contain household employment data (including unemployment rates). The files will reflect the seasonally adjusted data once they are made available again.

Housing permits data (Census Bureau) for the nation, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and the metro areas within our three-state area are available and are seasonally adjusted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
