Philadelphia Fed Promotes Economist to Vice President

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia Fed has promoted Mitchell Berlin to vice president and economist from assistant vice president and economist in the Bank’s Economic Research Department. Berlin will continue to lead that department’s Banking and Financial Markets section.

Berlin has led the Banking and Financial Markets section since October 2000, first as research officer and economist from 2000 to 2004, and as assistant vice president and economist since January 2004. Before that, he was an economic advisor and economist from 1995 to 1999. Berlin was a research economist in his previous term at the Bank, from 1984 to 1988.

Following his first term at the Bank, Berlin was an assistant professor of finance both at the Stern School of Business at New York University and the business school at Indiana University.

Berlin has published articles in the major finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, External Link the Review of Financial Studies, External Link and the Journal of Financial Intermediation. External Link

He is a member of the American Finance Association, American Economic Association, Econometric Society, Financial Management Association, Financial Intermediation Research Society, and the Western Finance Association.

Berlin has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia helps formulate and implement monetary policy, supervises banks and bank holding companies, and provides financial services to depository institutions and the federal government.
