Philadelphia, Pa. - On Monday May 24, 30 Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia employees spruced up Smith Playground in Fairmount Park. Their efforts were part of a Bank initiative, PhillyFedCARES, which facilitates and promotes employee participation in community service.

PhillyFedCARES was launched in January when employees participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, pitching in to paint and clean John Welsh Elementary School. Another day of service is planned for Patriot's Day, September 11, 2010.

The main mission of PhillyFedCARES is to aid in the welfare and education of children; however, the initiative also facilitates other volunteer efforts. It encourages employees to suggest community service events of their choice.

"Back to work on Monday took a new meaning for me as I pruned bushes instead of e-mails. It was rewarding to work alongside my colleagues to maintain a safe and attractive playground for children," said Ashlan Taylor, Philadelphia Fed senior graphics designer.

"We are proud that a group of our employees participated. We also look forward to doing other community service projects through PhillyFedCARES," said Thomas Lombardo, financial services industry relations officer at the Bank.

Since 1899 Smith has been providing magical play experiences to the children of Philadelphia. Best known for the century-old giant wooden slide and mansion-like playhouse, Smith also offers six acres of play with more than 50 pieces of unique, age-appropriate play equipment in Fairmount Park.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia helps formulate and implement monetary policy, supervises banks and bank holding companies, and provides financial services to depository institutions and the federal government. It is one of the 12 regional Reserve Banks that, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., make up the Federal Reserve System. The Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank serves eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware.
