Community Profile: Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)

Introduction

The Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA MSA consists of Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties and includes the principal cities of Harrisburg and Carlisle.*

The MSA is located in south-central Pennsylvania. The city of Harrisburg, located in Dauphin County along the Susquehanna River, is the state capital. Harrisburg is approximately 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Carlisle, located in Cumberland County, is west of Harrisburg.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) modified MSA boundaries effective January 1, 2004, at which time the boundary for the Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA MSA changed. Before 2004, the MSA was called the Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle, PA MSA and also included Lebanon County. With the OMB’s boundary modifications, Lebanon County became a separate MSA.

For the remainder of this report, we will refer to Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry counties as the Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA MSA.
